The Disability Discrimination Act - Stair Nosings

The Disability Discrimination Act comes into force on October 1st 2004. Put simply this will require any organisation that provides services to the public, to ensure that they have taken reasonable steps to ensure that their services are accessible to all customers- no matter what their disability.

Part M of the Building Regulations (2004) no longer refers to disabled access but instead refers to access for all. The aim of this Part M is to foster a more inclusive approach to design and accomodate the needs of all people regardless of disability, age or gender.

Where stairs are concerned, part M1 or M2 Requirements shall be satisfied if:

Provisions 1.33 (i) all nosings are made apparent by means of a permanently contrasting material 55mm wide on both the tread and the riser.

Provisions 1.13 (d) its surface is firm, durable and slip resistant, with undulations not exceeding 3mm under a 1mm straight edge for formless materials. Inappropriate materials might be sand or gravel.

PAR now supply a 2mm subtrate of PARGRIP Nosings that meet all of the above requirements. Please contact our sales office for further information.
