High Temperature Insulation

Sindanyo Health & Safety Information

1. Scope

This information is provided pursuant to the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 Section 6

2. Composition

  • SINDANYO H61 – High alumina cement, glass fibre, Wollastonite and clays
  • SINDANYO L21 – Ordinary Portland Cement blended with man-made fibres and density modifiers
  • SINDANYO L23 – As L21 but with an additional treatment of Sodium Silicate.
  • SINDANYO L26 – As L21 but with an additional treatment of Silicone Resin
  • SINDANYO M31 – Ordinary Portland Cement blended with mineral fibres and density modifiers. This grade also contains a small proportion of carbon with additional treatment of fibre and is therefore unsuitable for electrical applications.
  • SINDANYO H51 – Ordinary Portland Cement with man-made fibres and Wollastonite.
  • REFRAVER – High alumina cement reinforced with grass cloth.
  • REFRAVER S – As REFREVER but with additional treatment of Silicone Resin.

3. Handling

No special protective measures are normally required. SINDANYO grades are dense. Care should be taken not to exceed the safe working loads of lifting gear, hoists, stacker trucks, racks, shelving or floors.

4. Storage

To avoid damage and distortion SINDANYO grades should be stored under cover on a smooth level foundation in a dry environment. SINDANYO grades are non-combustible and therefore do not burn, SINDANYO grades are chemically stable and there is not hazard under normal storage conditions.

5. Machining

Machining of SINDANYO grades causes dust. When regular or large scale machining operations are carried out it is good occupational hygiene practice to keep all dust to the lowest practicable level. Dust extraction should be provided on all machines where operations produce appreciable dust. Ventilation is required to ensure that dust does not become airborne and is extracted in a direction away form the operator.

6. Protection Of Sight And Hearing

Care should be taken to ensure that eyes are protected against flying particles. The machining of SINDANYO grades may include processes which are subject to the Protection of Eyes Regulation 1974. Where machining operations cause excessive noise levels, appropriate precautions should be taken.

7. Chemical Processing

If any further processing of SINDANYO grades involving use of potentially hazardous chemicals, advice should be obtained from the suppliers of the chemicals regarding their safe use and handling.

8. Product identification

  • SINDANYO H61 is grey in colour
  • SINDANYO L21, L23, L26 contain a green pigment
  • SINDANYO M32 contains a pink pigment
  • SINDANYO H51 is grey in colour
  • REFRAVER, REFRAVER S are white in colour.

9. Health & Safety Information

A small proportion of personnel may be sensitive to the mineral fibre contained with in the SINDANYO dust. Man-made mineral fibres can cause irritation of the skin and eyes and excessively dusty conditions may cause irritation to the upper respiratory tract. Whiles most peoples skin becomes resistant after a period of adaptation some need to take precautions to protect their skin and a small number may have to move to other work. The Department of Health’s Committee on carcinogenicity has concluded that despite the limitations of the available evidence occupational exposure to rock/slag wool or glass wool has shown the potential to increase the risk of lung cancer. The I.A.R.C. (International Agency for Research in Cancer) classifies glass wool, rock wool, slag wool and ceramic fibres as "possible carcinogenic to humans" (Category 2B).

CLOTHING
Most operators find it best to wear loose clothing especially avoiding tight constrictions at neck and wrist.

BARRIER CREAMS
The use of these is a matter of personal choice. Most people prefer not to use them.

10. Standards

Some SINDANYO grades contain glass fibre. Maximum exposure limits (MEL) for man-made fibres will be 2 fibres/ml (TWA 8 hours) in addition to the gravimetric MET 5mgm / m3

PRODUCT INFORMATION

SILICONE TREATED SINDANYO GRADES

These products may contain Toluene as part of the process specification , whilst stoving substantially reduces the amount of Toluene in the Products it does not totally eliminate it. (Toluene OES 50ppm).

The Company takes all responsibility care with regard to the quality and standard of these Products but, as these are used for a multiplicity of purposes and the Company has not control over the method of application or use, the buyer must satisfy itself that the Products are suitable for the intended applications or use.

Technical literature is available, describing the properties and characteristics of SINDANYO grades. Designers and users of the material should acquaint themselves with the contents of this literature.

12. Disposal Of Waste

SINDANYO dust should be removed by vacuum at frequent intervals during working to prevent accumulation of dust. Such dust should be placed in impermeable, heavy-gauge polythene sacks or bags which should then be sealed, and disposed of. Such waste must be disposed of at an authorised tip by arrangement with the local waste disposal authority, the appropriate (district of island) council. Off-cuts should be disposed of in the game manner.
