Pump & Valve Packing

Pump & Valve Packing

Pump and valve packings, sometimes referred to as compression packings or gland packings, provide an effective sealing solution in dynamic applications such as valves, expansion joints and rotary, centrifugal and reciprocating pumps.

Packings are made up from soft, pliant yarns which are typically manufactured into a braided construction. The inclusion of additional materials, such as extra lubricants and wire reinforcements, provide extra properties suited to specific applications.

Supplied in set lengths by the box, compression packings are converted into rings which are slotted into the annular space between the rotating part and the body of the valve or pump. When the gland follower is back in-situ and tightened against the top packing ring, the 'packing set' will compress, radially expanding the rings to create an effective seal between the body of the valve and the rotating member.

If you’re unsure which compression packing will be most suitable for your application, we’ve put together a comparison table below to help make your decision easier. This contrasts properties such as temperature ratings and chemical suitability.
