They help prevent galvanic corrosion, reduce unwanted electrical current flow and support cathodic protection systems in pipelines and industrial piping.
A complete flange insulation kit typically includes:
- Insulating Gasket - Provides the sealing barrier between the two flange faces while electrically isolating the joint.
- Insulating Bolt Sleeves - Isolate bolts from the flange assembly, eliminating metal-to-metal contact and reducing the risk of galvanic corrosion.
- Insulating Washers - Maintain electrical isolation across both sides of the joint, ensuring consistent insulation performance throughout the entire flange connection.
- Steel Washers - Provide load distribution beneath the nuts and help maintain consistent joint compression.
As mentioned above, the kits insulate the joints and safeguard against two significant risks: galvanic corrosion and electrical arcing.
- Galvanic corrosion occurs when two different metals (such as copper and steel) come into contact with each other in the presence of water, salt, or other electrolytes. This creates corrosion, which can weaken the piping system and lead to costly repairs and downtime.
- Electrical arcing can occur when a voltage difference exists between flanges, particularly in systems that carry conductive fluids or those prone to static electricity buildup.
